Revered Community Leader and Cultural Ambassador Passes
HUMBLE BEGINNINGS & A LIFE DEDICATED TO SERVICE
Las Vegas, Nevada – March 21, 2019 – We are deeply saddened to announce that our founder, mentor, and spiritual father, Steven “Dashi” Vincent Baugh, passed away on March 17, 2019 at age 65. Dashi, a title meaning “Venerable” was awarded to him in 2000 as a testament to his prowess, expertise, and leadership. In 2014, he was awarded the title “Grandmaster”.
Dashi was known throughout the Las Vegas Strip and the greater Las Vegas community for leading dynamic performances of the traditional Chinese Lion dance. His efforts to spread this aspect of the Chinese culture grew significantly over the years and during the Chinese New Year season in 2019, Dashi and the Lohan School of Shaolin performed the Lion dance over 180 times.
As a reflection of his prowess, his Lion Dance team was featured in the blockbuster movie Rush Hour 2 which came about through Dashi’s work with celebrities. But Dashi’s most important legacy was his impact on countless human lives. Over the years, he welcomed, included and trained thousands of students. With his kind spirit, he gave many a home away from home, focused their energies and nurtured a community.
In 1994 Dashi followed his passion and started teaching martial arts to a handful of students in his garage. In 1998 he officially established the Lohan School of Shaolin. By 1999 he expanded his calling to help others and became ordained by Master Jy Din in Hawaii, under the Zen Buddhist Order of Hsu Yun. He then began serving as a Spiritual Counselor for hospice patients.
From his humble beginning, Dashi expanded his school and temple to its current 4000 sq. ft. studio in the heart of Chinatown. Throughout the years, his students have won Championships at local and out-of-state martial arts competitions. Many have gone on to establish sister schools in both the US and abroad.
Dashi was highly honored by community, business, and municipal organizations. At the end of the day, he was loved and respected within all of the communities that he touched: local, martial arts, business, Native American and spiritual. He was a beloved father and grandfather.
Dashi’s legacy is that of a life well lived and he set an inspiring example for all of us! A memorial will be held at Palm Eastern Mortuary, located at 7600 S Eastern Ave, Las Vegas, Nevada 89123 on Saturday, March 23rd with viewing visitation from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., and service beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Contributions in memory of Dashi and for the sustained growth of Lohan are welcome:
